Will Whitehorn OBE is a space industry pioneer and former president of Virgin Galactic.
As a former senior member of the Virgin Group management, Will Whitehorn has been variously described as Richard Branson’s ‘no 2’.
Will is the former President of UKspace. He also serves as Chair, Deputy Chair, or Non-Executive Director for various public bodies and companies, including the Royal Air Force, Good Energy PLC, Seraphim Space Investment Trust PLC, Glasgow SEC/SSE Hydro, The Scottish Gallery, AAC Clyde Space AB, and Space-Comm Expo.
Will Whitehorn was educated in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, graduating from the University of Aberdeen in 1981. He then spent a sabbatical year serving as President of the Student Union.
His career began with British International Helicopters, followed by British Airways and Thomas Cook roles. He was later recruited to Virgin by then-Managing Director Donald Cruickshank, who was initially tasked with enhancing the Virgin Group’s image in the City.
For over two decades, Will was a key figure in Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin empire. As the Group’s Brand Development and Corporate Affairs Director, he helped guide the global entertainment, media, and travel conglomerate through challenges and successes.
Will later became President of Virgin Galactic, Virgin’s pioneering commercial spaceflight venture.
As Star Trek famously said, “Space: the final frontier.” Thanks to innovative efforts like Virgin Galactic—a natural extension of Branson’s ventures in rail and air—this once-distant frontier is now within reach, with commercial spaceflight poised to become a reality.
In 2025, Will Whitehorn was awarded an OBE for his outstanding services to the aerospace and space industry.
