Tony Gubba
BBC TV Sports Presenter for over 25 Years

Tony Gubba

Tony Gubba - Sports Commentator, Voice Over Artiste and After-Dinner Speaker.

From Premiership football to ‘Dancing on Ice’ - it sounds like a very tricky manoeuvre, but not for versatile TV commentator Tony Gubba, who can now boast one of the longest broadcasting careers in British television sport.

Tony Gubba has been a familiar face and voice to millions of armchair sports fans for more than 35 years.

Originally a national newspaper journalist, he joined BBC sport in l972 and has since presented all of Aunties major sports programmes – replacing David Coleman as the front-man on ‘Sportsnight’ and later introducing ‘Grandstand’ with Frank Bough.

For the last three decades he has been a regular voice on BBC’s Saturday night flagship football programme ‘Match of the Day’ and has worked on every World Cup since Germany in l974.

When ITV launched their hugely successful ‘Dancing on Ice’ series two years ago, with World & Olympic Champions Jane Torville and Christopher Dean, it was Tony Gubba who they invited to be the commentator.

His amusing appraisals of celebrity skaters learning to ice-dance have become a popular part of a programme which attracts audiences of 12 million and which returns for a 3rd series in January, 2008.

On Ulrika Jonsson: “She says she’s fitter now than when she was 2l. Most blokes think you’ve always been fit Ulrika!”

On playboy ex-footballer Lee Sharpe: “He’s not normally this active before mid-night”

And on rugby star Kyran Bracken: “He skates like Benny Hill chasing a chorus girl”

Tony Gubba is an accomplished after-dinner speaker and a relaxed communicator who can work off-the-cuff in front of a live audience or present an important product launch to an audience of senior executives.

On a personal level, Tony was an amateur footballer and his hobbies now are golf and salmon fishing. He is well known as a writer of articles about fly-fishing and travel.

He was once a music student training to be an operatic tenor and often provides the vocal entertainment at the ‘Match of the Day’ xmas party.
