Simon Dyer is the winner of ITV’s BBQ Champ 2015.
Nicknamed ‘Womble’ by his friends, Simon Dyer has built a staggering 20 barbecues from scratch. He loves cooking outside so much, he can even be found grilling meat on New Year’s Eve.
Unable to walk past a skip without jumping in to find something, the farm owner has used everything from bricks to a washing machine to construct a BBQ or smoker.
With a passion for the wild side of cooking outdoors, Simon enjoys foraging for wild ingredients and smoking, fish, cheese, nuts and salts.
His love for cooking outdoors is the reason why he decided to apply for ITV’s BBQ Champ show. “I wanted to give it a go,” explains the dad-of-two. “This is something I love doing. As a farmer, I am an outdoor person. I love the whole thing of lighting a fire, preparing food and then cooking. It’s very relaxing.”
“Most of my meals are cooked outside and my big thing is to do Sunday lunch. Friends come around, it’s a social thing and we all stand around with the fire going. Everyone helps out. There is nothing better than cooking on coals.”
Cooking ‘seriously’ outdoors for more than ten years, Simon turned to recycling old materials to make a BBQ because he couldn’t afford to buy a new one.
“I couldn’t afford the £500 for a smoker, so I decided to build it myself. I’ve built over 20 now. People bring old barbecues to me and I add on bits. I like using stuff that people have thrown away and turning them into cookers and culinary masterpieces.”
Simon hopes the BBQ Champ show will inspire millions. “Get out and give it a go,” he advises. “People keep thinking barbecuing is about sausages, burgers and chicken – it’s not – there are so many things you can experiment with on a BBQ.”
